Lock and Safe

How-to guide

How to change your safe combination — battery first.

Most “my safe won't open” calls are a dead battery. Start there. Then follow the steps for your lock type to set a new code safely.

Updated · A-1 Lock & Safe

Step 1: Replace the battery

Electronic safe locks run on a 9-volt or AA batteries, usually behind the keypad cover. A weak battery can still light the keypad and beep but not have enough power to retract the lock. Use a fresh, name-brand alkaline battery — not one from the junk drawer.

On most keypads the battery is accessed from the outside, so you don't need the safe open to change it. Your combination is stored in memory and survives a battery change.

Step 2: Change an electronic keypad code

  • Open the safe and keep the door open for the entire process.
  • Find your lock's brand and model on the keypad or the inside of the door; procedures vary by manufacturer.
  • Typically: enter the current code, press the change or program key, enter the new code, and confirm it.
  • Test the new code at least three times with the door open and the bolts extended before closing the door.

Step 3: Mechanical dial locks

Changing a mechanical dial combination requires a change key and the current combination, and a mistake can lock you out for good. We recommend having a locksmith do it. It's a quick shop or service visit.

If the safe still won't open

  • Check that the handle isn't under pressure; turn the handle only after the lock releases.
  • Look for a lockout penalty — several wrong codes can disable the keypad for a set time.
  • Don't force the handle or pry the door; that can damage the boltwork and make the opening harder.
  • Call a licensed safe technician. Bring proof of ownership.

Common questions

Why won't my safe open with the right code?

The most common cause is a weak battery. Replace it with a fresh alkaline battery and try again before calling a locksmith.

Will changing the battery erase my combination?

No. Electronic safe locks store the code in non-volatile memory.

Can I change a dial safe combination myself?

It is possible with a change key, but a mistake can lock you out permanently. A locksmith can change it quickly and safely.
